Disposal of Obsolete Equipment

The Ark has been around for over 13 years and in that time has been focused on getting cost effective computer resources into schools.

The majority of the equipment we handle comes from corporate partners or leasing organisations. We remove ALL information from the computers using a "special scrub program" of US Department of Defence standards to ensure the data can't be recovered. If this isn't possible we remove the disk, physically destroy it and then recycle it as explained below. The equipment is then repaired and/or reconfigured to make it suitable for our target markets by adding memory, increasing installed hard disk capacities and adding or removing components such as CD-Rom, DVD-Rom, modems, etc. We then test the equipment and clean it ready for resale.

Re-usable Equipment

Our major focus is to try and get computers into New Zealand schools and we have done this successfully for many years by providing the equipment, installation and warranty on the equipment.  We also supply schools in the Pacific Islands including Samoa, Cook Island, Tonga and Fiji.

Another target for this equipment is the Computers in Homes initiative. As well as this, The Ark is in the process of establishing the NZ Chapter for World Computer Exchange with a focus of getting computers at a low cost into the Pacific Islands. The World Computer Exchange is a non profit initiative and will be supported by sponsors and volunteers to keep the cost to the end users as low as possible.

Recycling

Much of the equipment that comes from the corporate / private sector is not suitable for reuse but there is a desire to keep as much as possible of the hazardous electronic waste (e-waste) out of landfill, both in New Zealand and overseas. We sort and collate the equipment depending on it's make up into various loads, and then use third party organisations to do the recycling.

  1. WE NO LONGER ACCEPT PRIVATE DISPOSALS
  2. Where possible we use local recyclers for cables, steel, cardboard, aluminium, plastic, polystyrene, etc
  3. As we get to the more complex e-waste products we sort these into major product groups such as CRT Screens; Computers/Notebooks; Miscellaneous items (printers, scanners, keyboards, mice, etc).  These are then consolidated and shipped to specialist organisations, pre-dominantly in either Korea or Singapore. These organisations are global companies that meet international standards for processing this type of equipment and meet the requirements for the transportation of waste between countries. see International Basel Convention
